Bringing Back Your Business Again

Why did you start your business? Freedom from corporate slavery - this is one of the most common answers people give when asked this touchy question. They won’t accept anybody else as boss except they themselvews. They have come up with a dynamite idea and would like to put it into practice. They are in love with all of these ideas. You were probably brimming with mirth and so fabulously enchanted with your business when it just started out. You probably felt like a teenager who had finally fallen in love with somebody. All you could think about or talk about was your business.

It is time to fall in love again. It’s been a while since you started your business and so much has changed. You busted your tail. You’ve had some rewards. Your love for your business may have seen some tough times, and right now it might be wavering. So ask yourself honestly, do some serious self-talk - are you still married to your business, or is it nothing more than a partner, a confidant yet a strange bedfellow?

If the latter situation applies to you, then maybe you and your job need some quick “marriage counseling” in the form of these helpful hints.

Cool off and give yourself a break. Who knows, maybe that time off is what you need to rekindle your passion. Take a little time off and reconnect with the reasons that you started your business. Find that excitement and light that spark just like back in the old days. Maybe you need a reboot. Really let yourself feel what you felt at the start.

Ask yourself what you really love about your business. Some aspects of work you may enjoy, while others, you’d rather mail it in. Focus on the good things. Learn to take consolation in what you have. If work is hard, then find ways to facilitate things and give you and your staff a break. Delegate the work you don’t enjoy. Get outside help. Do what you love and give the rest away.

Map out a plan. Make a plan to get yourself out of overwhelm and back doing the work that you really enjoy. Grab a pen and paper, go write. Maybe it’s time to jog your memory on the business plan. Read the first page where you wrote all the exciting stuff about what a great business you have. With a strategic plan in place, that should put you back in the driver’s seat. You’ll feel powerful with a plan.

Spread the gospel. Once you’ve revitalized your plan and your mission, why not tell everybody about your return to form? Just like after your first dates when that’s all you’d talk about, share your enthusiasm. Share the feelings of freedom you enjoy. Spread the love and you’ll find that you would be feeling better about your business, and making other people feel proud of you for keeping the candle of love burning despite of it all.
